LIFE SUPPORT

OPPOSES HB 2020

The Unborn Victims of Violence Act

Offers No Protection for the Unborn

Clackamas, OR - While many have promoted HB 2020 as a pro-life bill, Life Support believes that a closer examination of the actual language of HB 2020 exposes it for what it really is – a back door reaffirmation of Roe Vs. Wade that offers no protection for unborn children.  Instead of protecting unborn children from violence, HB 2020 actually endorses their violent death. Life Support is asking the supporters of HB 2020 to reconsider their support.

Any legislator who votes to approve HB 2020 is endorsing the following statement:

A person does not commit criminal homicide if the death is of an unborn child and occurs:

(a) During a lawful abortion performed with the pregnant woman's consent to the abortion

or with the consent of a person authorized to act on the pregnant woman's behalf; 163.005 C(3)

Regarding the above text, David Brownlow, Executive Director of Life Support says:

“That is an absurd statement to include in any type of "pro-life" legislation.  A person most definitely does commit criminal homicide if he sticks a knife inside a pregnant woman and tears her child apart limb from limb!  Abortion may not be criminal homicide according to man's law, but man's law is irrelevant when it comes to the shedding of innocent blood.  The only law that matters is God's law, and there is no ‘lawful abortion’ in His eyes.”

Jim Leuenberger, Life Support Treasurer, said, “HB 2020 specifically protects the abortionist's right to kill an unborn child.  Section 163.005 C(3) is false.  We cannot agree that an abortionist ‘does not commit criminal homicide’ when he takes an innocent human life.”

Life Support also opposes HB 2020 because of the following definition of "person:"

'Human being' means:  (A) A person who has been born and was alive at the time of the criminal act; Sec. 163.005 c

Bob Ekstrom, Constitution Party of Oregon Chairman, told Life Support, “We should be including the unborn child in the definition of ‘person.’  That would bring unborn children under the protections of the 5th amendment, which guarantees that no person shall be deprived of life without due process of law.  HB 2020 does just the opposite.  It purposely excludes unborn children from any constitutional protections."

Life Support believes that HB 2020 has the effect of legitimizing the basic tenets of Roe v. Wade and is not a "pro-life" bill.  Life Support is asking all pro-life sponsors of HB 2020 to remove their names from this flawed piece of legislation.
