Clackamas, Oregon -   HB 2020 passes Oregon House of Representatives with unanimous Republican support, and Life Support is incensed.

 

While many have promoted HB 2020, the so-called “Laci Peterson” bill, as a pro-life bill, Life Support believes that in reality, HB 2020 is a back door reaffirmation of Roe Vs. Wade.  

 

In what could only be described as a complete betrayal of everything Republicans have professed to believe regarding the sanctity of life, Republicans in the Oregon House of Representatives, with the full support of Oregon Right to Life, voted unanimously to approve a bill that says:

 

“A person does not commit criminal homicide if the death is of an unborn child and occurs: During a lawful abortion performed with the pregnant woman's consent to the abortion or with the consent of a person authorized to act on the pregnant woman's behalf; or as the result of acts committed by the pregnant woman.” HB 2020 Section 1

 

Regarding the above text, David Brownlow, Executive Director of Life Support, says:

 

“It is disappointing, to say the least, that after 32 years of blind loyalty to the Republican Party, and after millions of pro-life dollars have been spent electing Oregon Republicans, we have come to the place where every single House Republican voted for a bill that would enter into Oregon law a statement that says ‘abortion is not criminal homicide.’  With those words, the Republican betrayal is now complete.  That Oregon Right to Life supported this sell-out only adds to the treachery.”

 

Bob Ekstrom, Constitution Party of Oregon Chairman, told Life Support,

 

“A statement that proclaims abortion is not criminal homicide has no place in any kind of pro-life legislation.  Every abortion is an act of criminal homicide in God’s eyes - no matter what kind of laws the Republican House members may choose to pass.”

 

"By a unanimous vote, Republicans have now said that abortion is "lawful" and does not constitute criminal homicide. This vote has set a new low for Republican politics. By saying that abortion is not criminal homicide, they’re establishing an evil standard that, within Republican circles, could even motivate some weak Republican mothers to abort their preborn babies. When your principles, or lack thereof, allow for compromise; then at critical times, you will compromise. And that is what the Oregon House has done with this vote. No matter how they justify their vote, abortion is still homicide, and just because they say it isn’t doesn’t make it any less a killing in God’s eyes."
