Requests
Pro-Life Legislators to Stand By Their Word
Clackamas,
OR – LIFE SUPPORT asks
all Oregon legislators who claim to be pro-life to sign their name to
the Pledge (www.lifesupportoregon.org/legislator_pledge.htm)
being circulated by the Coalition for Abortion Revenue Elimination
(CARE). The Pledge
states:
OUR
PLEDGE TO THE PEOPLE OF OREGON
TO STOP THE FUNDING OF ABORTION
We,
the undersigned, are aware the state of Oregon, through its Oregon
Health Plan (OHP) funds abortion. We
believe abortion is the taking of a human life, and therefore abridges
federal and state constitutional rights to life.
We also believe that abortion is used as a convenience (not a
medical necessity) and should not be paid for by the taxpayers of
Oregon. We think it
is reprehensible that OHP priorities abortion over true medical
necessities, such as heart valve replacement.
We think it is unconscionable that OHS projects $3.22 million to
be spent on abortion between 2005 and 2007.
We believe that taxpayers should not be forced to aid and abet in
an immoral and unconstitutional act, and we wish to assist in bringing
an end to tax-funded abortion in the State of Oregon.
Therefore,
as an elected representative of the people of the State of Oregon, we
promise to:
1)
Oppose any bill or budget that contains funding for induced
abortion.
2)
Propose and support legislation and/or other actions that will
eliminate funds for abortion.
For
Pro-lifers, the next abortion is unbearable. For us, it is Terri
Schaivo 4000 times a day. When
we send our pro-life legislative team out on the field in Salem, we
expect them to fight hard - not just wear the team colors.
Bob
Ekstrom, Field Director of LIFE SUPPORT, said:
“Passing legislation this session is unlikely given the
disposition of the Senate and the Governor. What is left to do and
what is within our power to do is for the House pro-life legislators and
Speaker Karen Minnis to refuse budget dollars for abortion. This is
‘hard ball’ politics, but it can be and should be played. It
is the way political winners play the game.
The pro-life citizenry has become frustrated with pro-life
legislators who are too good-mannered to ever win a battle.”
David
Brownlow, Ex. Director of LIFE SUPPORT, asked:
“How could it be possible, that after several decades of
supporting “pro-life” politicians, we are still arguing whether the
state should continue sending blood
money to Oregon’s legalized child-killing industry?
It is definitely time to shake things up down in Salem.”
On
April 4, 2005, at 12:00 Noon, LIFE SUPPORT will join Believers Against
Child-Killing and Oregonians for Life (CARE members) for a joint press
conference in the Press Room to encourage every legislator who calls
him/herself “pro-life” to sign the Pledge.
