REPUBLICAN DISCEPTION OVER
ABORTION
FUNDING “CUTS”
Clackamas,
OR – LIFE SUPPORT objects to “pro-life” Republican
disception regarding a supposed diminishing of money to be delegated
for abortions.
Republican House
leadership claimed a "pro-life" victory after
twenty-seven of their members voted to approve the 2006/2007 Oregon
Department of Human Services budget - in spite of the fact that
the budget included millions of dollars for state funded
abortions. “This was a victory,” we were
told, because Republicans had, "for the first time in
Oregon history,” cut $600,000 from the amount of money
ODHS can spend for abortions.
After
an investigation of ODHS budgeting practices, LIFE SUPPORT
learned that there were absolutely no cuts made to
the amount of money ODHS can spend for abortions over the next two
years. ODHS does
not budget funds for individual medical procedures covered
under the Oregon Health Plan. The
dollars included in a proposed budget are simply estimates.
Any OHP participant who meets the requirements for receiving
a state-funded abortion is entitled to get one. The only way
the ODHS abortion payments will be reduced this year is if
fewer women apply for a state-funded abortion - which would
certainly be a good thing.
David
Brownlow, Executive Director of LIFE SUPPORT said, “There
were no cuts in ODHS abortion funding.
If there are any reductions in abortion payments, it will
be because of a downturn in the market demand for dead babies.
Any claims to the contrary are baseless. The only cut made by
the Republicans would seem to be in the level of candor
with which they communicate to the Oregonians they are supposed to
be serving."
LIFE
SUPPORT
will applaud any reduction in the number of abortions, no
matter what the cause. However, thousands of children
will die in 2006 because of this unconscionable abuse of
taxpayer dollars.

Brownlow, Communications Director of LIFE SUPPORT,
said, “With a state that is rated the ‘most dangerous state for
an unborn baby,’ by its unregulated clinics and liberal abortion
laws, it is no wonder some Republican legislators are searching for
good news. But,
falsifying statistics to get re-elected is pompous and
disingenuous.”
